Master Chief Owns Kenny

This is a picture that i added in the people from the south park show into a screenshot from the videogame Halo. I cut each individual south park character out and put them in specific locations. The character of kyle is put in the tube to the left of the picture. He is not fully on the screen so that it looks more realistic and so that i looks like he is auctually in the pipe. The character of Stan is standing on the box in the background. All i did to achieve this is place his character after cutting him out of another picture on the box. The characters of Kenny (the dead one) and Cartman (the one with the gun) were both strategically covering up aliens that were in the original picture. In the final product it looks as if Cartman and the chief are fighting while Kyle and Stan look on in horror as their friend Kenny got shot and is being eaten by rats (which is typical of his character in the TV show for anyone that isnt familiar with the show). If you want to see the picture in a much higher quality look at it in my facebook account.

Tree

To do this I created layers of green and used a large smudge brush to create different patches of green. Then I used a very small smudge brush set at 90% smudge rate to create the grass. To make the tree I downloaded (with Marty's help) a tree brush. Then I used a small galaxy brush to make the leaves.

Snow Driveway

This image is suppose to look like you are looking up a snow covered driveway. The first thing I did when making this painting was designing the driveway. To do this I made two lines, each coming from the corners and going diagonal to the center to make it look like it is getting smaller. After doing this I colored the end of the driveway and kept shading and smudging darker colors of gray until I reached the end of the driveway. The next thing I did was using one of the different options of the brush tool in order to make the tire tracks. I did this by gradualling made the brush smaller as the driveway got longer. Making the snow banks was the next project I came across. In order to make them I used the spray paint brush along the sides of the driveway. After doing this I used the filter tool and somehow made the driveway to curve. My last project were the trees; they took forever. After I made the first one I figured out how to copy them. When doing this I had a ton of trouble with the layers. After this I decided to just make separate trees, and this didn't work out either because, one it was the next day, and two I couldn't match the right color. Finally, on the last day of working on this painting I used a different computer and everything worked out. The used the smug tool the most in this painting and it took me about 5 class periods.

This is my earlier image but I added a background.

A guitar

This is a guitar... I played around with making straight lines using the shift key and also making curved lines. I also used bright colors for the background but I used blah colors on the guitar. I also tried a little bit of shading around the top of the guitar to make depth. I used the sparks tool to add snazzy color to the back ground. That is still my favorite tool. I don't know anything about guitars so I just tried to draw this from a picture.

...Seven Days...

Ahem. I have to admit, I've never seen the movie 'The Ring' or whatever it's called. I did my own personal take on it. I mainly used the square brush technique, mainly to make it look like a TV. I used the spark brush to make an explosive feel... And then used the blur tool to make it look strangely awesome. The red says seven days. There is a ring. It's yellow. Yeah. (Mock at my epic fail. Maybe I really should see the movie before jumping to conclusions, uh?) This is basically abstract.

I didn't have enough time to finish this. New things that i learned was that you can zoom in to make individual things more crisp looking and that you can make a strait line by using the shit button. To make the back ground i made a lot of layers and used different shades of color to make the sunset. I also used the smudge tool and the air brush to make the clouds and the lights.

Full Moon

This is a picture of mountains with a full moon rising behind them. I mainly used the paintbrush and smudge tool. To get greater detail i layered many different colors and shades in the sky, mountains, lake, and trees.

*StarQuestionmark

On this work of art i used the fade tool to create the sky and the paint tool to create the contrasting land. I made the fireworks in a separate image and copied them into this one. I made them using squares that faded and made them all come out of the same point.

sunset

Actual Picture my picture
This picture was painted according to a picture I took this summer of the sunset on the way home from Bar Harbor. I used the color eyedrop tool to choose my colors according to the actual colors in the sky because they were too difficult to find on the color finder. They are still not exact but they are close. I used the galaxy tool to make the bushes and then colored in the rest with black. The sky was done by layering the different shades and then just using the smudge tool to blend them all together. After I drew in the telephone poles I realized that it was going to be very difficult to draw in the actual telephone lines. I did not want to ruin the painting because I knew my hand was not steady enough to make good lines, so I copied part of the actual picture and put it in and then drew over the picture, blending the colors together and remaking the telephone poles by drawing over the pasted copy of the original. To make the telephone poles straight lines I clicked and hit shift and then just dropped the line down until I wanted it to stop and clicked again. The poles are also not in their exact spots because the distance for the telephone poles were off in my painting so I just copied and pasted parts of the telephone lines and made my own pattern with the telephone poles.

This was the painting that I originally started until I realized that I could not draw the telephone lines in, so I changed my color scheme.

Cloth Mario

I've been playing around with the effects on my Mario picture, I used cloth effect to do this.

Bridge

This was the first picture I drew, so it's not very good. I kept it so that I might add something, but I'm just going to post it anyway. I just use smudge to get the white in the water, and to make the grass dark. I also used the smudge to make the path look overgrown with grass.

Snow and Rocks and Deer and other things

In this picture i started out with three colors in the background. I then made the trees using the paint brush and smudge tool mixing a lot of different shades of green. I put in gray then shaded it to make the trees some shadows. With the deer i first cut and pasted it, but i made a second layer and made the body. I could not make the head so i just left the one it already had on it. It took me an hour to finish the shading on the upper lip.

The Beach

In this painting I used different colors to make the sand, ocean, and shell. I blended the different colors by using the smudge tool. I also used the smudge tool to create the trail behind the plane. While doing this painting I used the zoom often so I was able to paint the little things in the distance instead of working from far away. I added white to create the waves and the foam of the ocean. I also tried to create the sand by doing different shades of brown so it didn't look so plain.

Super Stars

I started with just the tan background. To make the tree I started with the limbs just useing a brown paint. I then put dots of the green color and smudged them in. For the people I just used black paint and the pencil tool for their hair. The chains of the swingset I got by painting a black thick line and then putting lines of color in the black to make the color come through. Then finally for the sun I used sparks tool.

Curious George

This is a picture of Curious George, it was a very simple picture to make in gimp. What I did first was found the picture online and then opened it up in gimp. The next thing that I did was went to the layer menu and added a new layer to the original layer of the picture. So now I had a background layer of George and a new blank layer on the top of it. It was actually pretty hard t0 make sure that I was not drawing on the background layer but eventually I figured out how to stay on the new layer. The last thing that I had to do was add color to the picture. What I did was selected the color picker tool from my toolbox to get the exact colors that I needed. Then I used the bucket fill tool to color it in.

Starz...

This is night time. This is not really anything special. I just used the sparks tool to get the yellow stars and the white stars I just changed the size of my brush to make the stars bigger and smaller. I Haven't yet mastered the sparks tool. It kind of has a mind of its own and makes stars big and small as it pleases. It still is fun though because you never know what you are going to get.

Retro Mcdonalds

This is a representation of a retro mcdonald's. I used a brush to make all the shapes of the store. I added the glow to the signs and arches by using the airbrush. In order to get the uniformity of the red and white bricks on the bottom I created a brush so that I could make as many as I needed. to add texture to the building and grass I used the galaxy airbrush and then used the blur tool. I also used the airbrush and blur tools to make the stars.

Link and Darth Vader

I got to know the cut tool very well. I was planning on adding a back round of Link jumping at Darth Vader.

Sunset at the End of Time

This piece took me the longest so far. I started with a background layer that I painted in thick stripes of colors, like a custom gradient. I blended those layers and added colors in that I thought would mix well into the sunset. At the bottom, I put in the green stripe for the horizon and ground. My second step was to create a layer on which I would draw the hill and the grass. I made a large brown lump and then to make the cliff face, I outlined the rough shape with a thin black line. To make the cliff appear 3-d I continually made it be overtaken by the grass as the cliff got closer to the bottom of the screen (essentially thinning the region of brown so that it was shaped like a lumpy triangle). To make the grass, I used the Pencil sketch brush and then just smudged it with the original brown using the calligraphy brushes until it looked wave-like. I then smudged the edges of the hill to make it look "softer." My next step was to create a layer between the background layer and the hill layer and, using tree brushes I downloaded from the internet, paint in various trees. The big thing was starting at the horizon with small trees and growing continually larger as I went. This created depth and realism to the trees. At this point, I thought of adding stars to the sky, so I used a very very small brush and made some stars in the blue portion and a few in the purple-and-yellow. My next step was to make a fourth layer, on which I put the large tree and added the swing. Back on the Hill layer, I made the shadow by using the Dodge/burn tool and the fuzzy circle brush to create a sort of half-shadow at the edges. After this I used the blur tool lightly on the big tree and the swing, and then more heavily on the Forest Layer. I added a center of light behind the hill on the background layer using filters--->light and shadow---->lighting effects and then placing the source of light behind the hill and changing the color of the light to a slight yellow. My final details were done with the dodge/burn tool, as I shadowed the hill from bottom to top. Also, if you look closely at the edge of the cliff face, you will see a "glow" near the edge which was also done with the dodge burn tool. I zoomed up very close and made a bright line that followed the cliff edge to create the effect of light shining from behind.

Mario

The one below is mine, and the smaller one on the right is the original.

This Picture took me a while. I used the Color Picking Tool a lot to get the right color from the original picture. I also used many different layers to create the background, foreground, and bottom. I mostly drew this zoomed in, so that I could pay attention to detail. I copied and pasted some things as well to speed up the process, I used this for the green hills, the question mark blocks, the bushes, the stage area, the zeros, the arrows, and the three blue blocks. I also used the bucket tool to fill in the big areas. I kept the original close by and copied it almost pixel by pixel. I think the only part I'm not real happy with is the clouds. I would also like to mention I did everything by hand, nothing was traced, and I only used the original for the color.

Blended Nebula

What I did for this one is a lot of blending. I just set up a solid greenish blog in the middle and then blended it into the background. I set up smaller layers by doing the same thing but only smaller and with different colors.

Super-Special-Awesome Pic #2!

Yep! This one was somewhat decent. I used a lot of pencil for this one, and the airbrush tool as well. I figured out about the straight line option doing this. YAY! But, anyways, the fuzzy brush also played a great part in this one as well. (I go for things that are slightly abnormal but still slightly believable.) The smudge tool also helped with the aura thing. It came out better than I expected! ^_^

For this desert scene I used different shades of tan for the sand on the sun side. The more directly the sun hit the sand in the picture the more redder it got so i used differen gradients on the same selection to achieve the right tone that i wanted. The parts where the shadows hit the sand dune i used different shades of blue to an almost black color. You can see in the picture how the shodows blend in with the concavity of the sand dunes. The sand in the foreground gives a good reference point as to how far away and how massive the sand dune in the background is.

Tranquil Reflections

This is just a different version of Ocean at Sunset

Ocean at Sunset

I started out with two fields of blue and orange. I added brown and red lines to the sky, then blurred it. I added white, purple and dark blue lines to the ocean. To get that wavy look, I blurred in waves.

This is a recreation of a picture of a waterfall that i found on google. I used the eye dropper tool in order to get the coloring right, and then i just layered the colors and smudged them. To make the clouds more realistic i added gray and used the smudge tool around the edges.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

I was going for more of an abstract look, with a lot of colors and really bright. I like the smudge tool cause it helped me make the snow caps and the avalanche. Also I used a really neato tool to make the sun and lighting on the the 2nd picture. I used the tool called spark and I found that it makes a really neato sun. But most of my pictures that I will post are going to be bright and not really toward the realistic side. This is because I like having really bright colors catch my eye and I believe that the colors I use really puts a spin on stuff.

Comet between Mars and Earth

I chose to do this because I like outer space and this was the first thing that popped into my head. I got to know the smudge tool a lot it helped blend the colors together. First what I did was make the planets and the comet, to make them I used the Ellipse tool. Then what I did was add the base color for mars then I added some craters and smudged the outer edge of them, after that I put some more layers of colors like a darker version of the base and black, I used the smudge tool to blend them together. To get the shade on the planets i used the airbrush tool.

I use a small paintbrush to to make the stars outline. I followed through with the blur tool to give it a faded effect. For the moon I used the ellipse tool. I filled in the circle with a soft white color. Then I used the paintbrush again for the black shadow. A good way to get the fade effect is with the fuzzy tool add-on. For the spots on the lighted side I used the spray-can tool set on a dark gray color. Just lightly spray in spots to blend in.

My Super-Special-Awesome Post #1 (GIMP)

This was one of the first few things I did for Media class. I used the pencil tool first to outline the tree trunk and the horizon area, and the 'leaves' as well. Then, I used the fuzzy brush tool and gave it a funkier look, but I still wasn't satisfied so I used the smudge tool on basically everything. I love how the grass came out, but it's still kind of lame. ^_^; Most of my techniques I used for this is what I learned from Media class, mostly because I was still learning how everything worked and such.
(Note: This IS supposed to be a 'firey-tree' looking thing, but it didn't come out as I hoped... Ahaha...)

fishing in Maine

I tried to make layers from the top down. starting with black, then making stars and the moon. I then made mountains with snow on the top of them using the airbrush and the smudge tool. i then tried to make layers of different shades of blue to try and make an icy hill but it didn't seem to come out that well then i made a frozen lake with an ice trap. i used smudge to make the snow come on to the ice a little bit on the sides.

Ocean Cliff

For this one I looked at various photos for inspiration. I used the smudge tool a lot, especially to make the gradual colors of the ocean and the sky, I also used it to make the wave effect on the wave. The tree is a picture that I got off the internet and put on the cliff. I then used the blur tool on the tree to make it fit in better with the rest of my drawing.
When I started making this picture I searched Google for a beach landscape picture, then I saved the picture as a gimp file so I would be able to use the color picker tool to get the exact colors. I first started the picture by coloring the sky and beach. Next, I made the clouds by selecting the confetti brush setting to make snowflake looking spots all over the sky then I used the smudge tool to blend the clouds together. After making the clouds I began to start painting the grass and ocean. What I did to make the grass was again to change the brush setting to a confetti setting and then smudged it in. Then I added different shades of blue into to the background and made mountains and the ocean, and again used the smudge tool to blend in the blue colors. Next, I made the rocks and used the color picker tool to get colors and used the smudge tool again. The final thing that I made in this picture was the palm trees. I made these by zooming in really close and made lines to give them a palm tree effect.

SnoWWWWWW

In this work of art i used the color select tool to find a bunch of shades of the sky. then i layered them one on top of each other and blended them together to get a nice darkening sky. Then i made 3 different individual trees and copied them and shrunk them down to make them more realistic. I also used the color select tool to find the shades of the snow and shades of the riders clothing. I also made the rider in a different image and shrunk him down to make the colors blend better.

The Sky

I tried to make a sunset by making the clouds brighter to the right. I thought that it looked boring so i added an asteroid. To make the asteroid look real i used the smudge tool to make the trail of fire. I also used the smudge tool to make the clouds look more realistic. Before using smudge i used the airbrush to start the clouds.

I started with the blue background then added the water and sand. To get detail in the sand i added grey and smudged it in. I did the same with the water but with white. I then smudged the sand and water together. For the clouds I used the galaxy (AP) tool then added white paint and smudged them together.

This is a picture of a city at night. I started out doing my layers ranging from black to different shades of blue. To create the sky I just smudged the shades into eachother. I also used the blurring tool to blend the different colors of the sky into eachother. I made the stars by blurring dots of white and then made the moon by using the smudging tool and adding gray to the white. I like using the smudging tool because it makes things blend instead of making them look like cookie cutter lines. So I usually smudge the edges of everything. When I was working on this I found a lot of new tools. Like someone in the class showed me how to make straight lines by just using the shift key. That new tip helped me create straight lines for the buildings. Then I found out how to clone things so I didn't have to keep making each individual window. So I used the rectangle select tool to select the part I wanted to copy and then copy and pasted it. It made making the windows a lot easier.

A moon?

I found the original image "Hunter's moon" on google and then I tried to replicate it. The tool I used most was the dropper tool where I opened up the original image in Gimp and then used the dropper to take the original colors from the first image in order to make the paintings look more alike. In the original had a slight pink color around the edges of the moon and the clouds and I was able to get that exact color in my painting. The trees around the edges are supposed to be spruce trees, but they were really hard to draw, sooo thats what they ended up looking like. I used the smudge tool a lot as well.

Beach

This was my first accomplished landscape. I decided to do this beach landscape that I looked up online because I wanted to demonstrate the shading that this picture used. The sand and sky both have multiple colors which gives the painting more depth. The waves in the water was tricky but I finally decided that the effect I wanted would only be achieved if I used multiple colors and the smudge tool. The trees were also difficult and I had to play around with it for a while. I used a dark green base and then gradually added in multiple shades of green and then smudged the color into the shape of a tree. The clouds are my favorite part because of their 3 dimensional shape. This was also achieved by using very dark colors and white and then the smudge tool in circular motions to get the shape of a cloud as you would see it.

Desert Cliff

I did this by taking a photo off Google and selectively smudging, then I blurred the edges of the smudges to give it a more blended look. I had to smudge horizontally to show the different layers of rock that are common in the desert.

RP-119

This is a picture I did of a barren, rusty planet similar to mars. I used layers on this picture quite a bit so that I wouldn't end up overlapping smudges and objects. The stars were made very simply...with a very small brush. Some of the stars (the ones that appear to be different colors) were actually a custom brush I made of a separate image I created by zooming in and creating a white circle with blue or orange pixels on the inside. The planet itself I did by creating a red circle, selecting it, adding HSV noise, blurring (both options are found on the filters menu), and then adding various details (like faded circles and the little dried rivers) and then smudging it all thouroughly. The edges are smudged as well to create a more 3-d look. The dark side is created with the use of the airbrush tool and the "Fuzzy circle." That really transforms the image by creating an extended shadow and three dimentional fade. On a layer between the stars and the planet I sprayed in some dust clouds that can be faintly seen around the planet, especially on the dark side (smudge tool used gratuitously). Finally, I added a lighting effect to the layer containing the planet. This option is really fun and really easy; it can be found in the filters menu under Light and shadow--->lighting effects.

Desert Sunset

An interpretation of high desert blending into agricultural fields, which can be pretty dramatic out West.

Not quite a finished work, but my eyes are starting to cross a little. Just playing with shades of the sames colors. Really only a few. Three shades of orange-red, three shades of brown-black and three shades of green. Using the smudge tool quite a bit along with the calligraphy tool varying the size of each tool. I gained some efficiency by painting all of the dark sides of the mountain and then all the light sides, and then blended each side all in one step. The mts. are a little more neon right now than I would like, probably will go back and add some darker, more earthy shades later.

I also downloaded and installed 1100 new brushes to Gimp (there are lots of brushes available online). The instructions for downloading and installing brushes are on bapstmoodle. Lots of options.
