Desert Sunset

An interpretation of high desert blending into agricultural fields, which can be pretty dramatic out West.

Not quite a finished work, but my eyes are starting to cross a little. Just playing with shades of the sames colors. Really only a few. Three shades of orange-red, three shades of brown-black and three shades of green. Using the smudge tool quite a bit along with the calligraphy tool varying the size of each tool. I gained some efficiency by painting all of the dark sides of the mountain and then all the light sides, and then blended each side all in one step. The mts. are a little more neon right now than I would like, probably will go back and add some darker, more earthy shades later.

I also downloaded and installed 1100 new brushes to Gimp (there are lots of brushes available online). The instructions for downloading and installing brushes are on bapstmoodle. Lots of options.

  1. The painterly quality of the work is really nice. I am curious if it is meant to be asymmetrical or just cropped that way. The line on the road does not blend from front to back as well as I would expect with the painterly aspects of the rest of the composition. Perhaps another road surface might better suit the work. Overall, fantastic.

  2. Yup, agreed on all points. I was thinking of cropping it a bit and working on the road. Trying to post my progress for the kids to check out as I learn along with them. Painted for the first time last week and used Gimp for the first time 2 weeks ago. Just a tech-guy/librarian trying to figure out composition and tools, learn and "teach" all at once. So far going great...everyone is teaching each other. Thanks for commenting.

  3. Telluride poster here. All work is interesting and am waiting for each development. Especially enjoyed the motion of snowww and the geometry of the cityscape.
